This question is one I get a lot. All though there is no definitive answer, there are a few things most business owners can do to get more business that doesn’t cost your arm, leg and the wallet in your pocket.

a. Join a local business group.

Local business groups are an excellent way to meet new people, share your skills and start networking. If you have been trying to build your business without a network of like-minded people, you have been fighting an uphill battle.

Every business group is different. Some cost money; some only allow one business owner per niche, and some are just meeting groups to chat and share. None the less, they are all valuable and well worth the time.

b. Join a local Facebook Group.

c. Ask for referrals and reviews.

It’s not a crime to ask your loyal customers for a review of your services or a referral. Some people frown at this, but others will see it as an urge to grow and succeed. People like successful people. Asking for reviews and referrals is common practice in many high-end services. There is no reason you can’t do it to.

When you are marketing your business you should only ever be aiming for a return on investment. There should be no question you’re making the money back on what ever marketing you do invest in.

If you start a marketing campaign and start to lose money, there is no point in continuing.

There are a couple of exceptions here. Firstly, If your doing online marketing like SEO you should give it at least three months to bring in a return on investment. Ranking in the search engines takes time no matter what your budget is. But, and it’s an important but, you should be able to see improvements in your ranking within the first 45 days. If you pay someone to do your SEO, make sure they give you a screenshot of your ranking at the start and an update every month. This way you can gauge if you made the right choice on the company you are investing in.

There is no doubt SEO is an excellent way to market. It pays off in a big way. But only a few business know how to do it effectively, the rest are all sales monkeys. If your company is actively selling to anyone and everyone. Chances are they are not the right place for you.
